Trusting the Process: How to Overcome Fear and Embrace Growth

Updated: 3 days ago

Professional Resume Writing

In life, there are many things that aren’t seen or heard but instead, felt, to be true. You might recognize this as a gut feeling, an instinct, or a hunch—a sense of what feels right or wrong. These instincts can serve as powerful guides, signaling "go for it" or "stay away." They trace back to our survival instincts, to times when quick, instinctual decisions helped us stay safe.

But here’s where it gets tricky: sometimes, our instincts can urge us to avoid things that are actually good for us. This happens when new experiences trigger feelings of discomfort or fear. That’s our brain trying to keep us "safe" by steering us away from things that feel unfamiliar. In these moments, you might have to go against those instincts, pushing through discomfort to reach self-awareness, personal growth, and, ultimately, the fulfilling life you’ve committed to creating.

When it comes to career coaching, this is what we at Shinebright call, Trusting the Process.

Resist the Resistance

There’s a point in every major change where it feels like giving up is the best option. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. It’s easy to feel motivated at the start, only to hit a wall as things get challenging. Suddenly, doubts creep in—"Is this working?" "Am I good enough?" The mind plays tricks, suggesting you turn back to what's familiar.

At Shinebright, we see this as an opportunity to confront and heal old fears that hold you back. Our co-founder, Shannon Philip, explains, “Resistance is a sign you’re stepping out of your comfort zone, and that’s something to be celebrated. It’s an opportunity to shed what no longer serves you and make space for growth.”

So, the next time resistance shows up, re-frame it as a sign of progress. Your brain is fighting to keep you safe in the face of change, but real growth happens beyond that point.

You Want It? Go Do It!

One of our favorite quotes comes from W. H. Murray, who said,

"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now."

If you want to see change, take a leap of faith. Fully commit to the process. Even when it feels challenging, remember that every step forward creates momentum, opening doors that would otherwise remain shut.

Stay Positive - Change Takes Time

Growth isn’t a straight line; it’s full of twists and turns, highs and lows. “It takes time and space to believe in yourself as you push through to the other side,” says our co-founder and coach, Meike Hennon.

Feelings of frustration and impatience are common along the way, especially when progress feels slow. Those dark moods cloud judgment and impair our ability to keep going. When those thoughts creep in, try taking a deep breath and examining what’s causing the frustration. Challenge negative thoughts and make room for positivity. Remember, change is hard, but it's worth it.

Let the Pros Be the Pros

At Shinebright, our career coaches are Gallup Certified Advisors with over twenty-five years of combined coaching experience. That translates into a wealth of insight and expertise to support you on your journey.

“There’s a momentum created within you when you know your coach will ask you about the progress you’ve made toward your goals,” says Shannon Philip. “The power of working with a coach is in having someone reflect back the thoughts and behaviors that serve you and the ones that may be holding you back.”

So, the next time something feels hard and you want to give up, pause and remind yourself: you’re not alone in this process. Our Shinebright coaches are here to guide, support, and empower you. Trust the process, and you may just find that everything you’re working toward is closer than you think.
